The Licensed Master Pet Stylist is an advanced test to demonstrate the expertise and skill required from the experienced groomer working in a commercial environment. This advanced skills testing program developed by the Grooming Institute of Canada, in conjunction with the National Agency of Pet Grooming Schools

The aim of the program is to offer Professional Groomers the opportunity to gain the Licensed Master Pet Stylist indicating they have achieved a nationally recognized advanced standard of skills and knowledge.

Entry to the examination is open to anyone who has passed the Grooming Institute of Canada's 9901 Licensed Groomer of Excellence and is a fully paid up member of the Grooming Institute, and whose candidature for the examination has been approved by the latter.

The Licensed Master Pet Stylist designation will be awarded only to those candidates who reach the required standard in both the practical and written components of the examination.

ALL CANDIDATES MUST HAVE PASSED THE GROOMING INSTITUTE OF CANADA'S 9901 LICENSED GROOMER OF EXCELLENCE.

THE PRACTICAL TEST
Enrollment
Candidates must apply in writing to the Grooming Institute of Canada, using form 2001E, enclosing a cheque made payable to the same for the Practical Module Fees. The deadline for application for the Module Exam and payment of fees is 6 weeks before the exam date.

Dates and Venues
Examinations are carried out at Test Centers approved by the Institute. Where possible candidates will be offered a choice of venues and dates. Where a candidate nominates more than one Test Center for the practical component, it is on the understanding that each alternative is acceptable. Once an applicant has been accepted and assigned a date and venue for the exam, this cannot be changed or canceled except in the event of unforeseen circumstances, ie fire, flood, power failure. Only then will an alternative date be arranged and fees refunded or credited in such circumstances. Dates are available on the third Sunday of each month, except for July, August and December when there are no test dates available.

Written confirmation will be sent for attendance at least 4 weeks before the exam using form 2001R.
All test dates are provisional until 3 full candidates have confirmed attendance and paid all fees in full.

The Practical Test
Candidates are responsible for obtaining suitable dogs for the Tests and transporting them to and from the Test Venue. The examinations are set in the following format and comprise"
  1. Modules 1 and 2
    Module 1: Scissoring--Puppy Cuts
    Module 2: Handstripping Wire Coated Breeds

  2. Modules 3 and 4
    Module 3: Style and Shape, combining Clipping and Scissoring--Mixed breed
    Module 4: Natural Coated Dogs (ie. German Shepherd, Siberian Husky etc.)

  3. Modules 5 and 6
    Module 5: Scissoring Parted Coated Breeds
    Module 6: Clipping and Scissoring Long Legged Terriers
All preparation must be completed prior to arrival at the Test venue, including any bathing, drying or coat care required for each breed. Ears, nails, groin and anal area must be dealt with. Trimming under pads as part of the preparation is optional. This preparation forms part of the marks allocated.

Membership Requirements
Each individual testing out is reminded that he or she must be a member of the Canadian Kennel Club or local dog grooming association such as the Ontario Dog Groomers Association and be employed by, or own a registered business.

Timetable

9:00am Test Center opens
9:15am Latest time for arrival
9:30am Module tests commence
4:00pm Module tests finish

The examiners will decide in which order the candidates will prepare the dogs and at what time each part of the test will start.

Practical Test Equipment
The Test Center will provide:
  • Power dryers/Power points
  • Facilities for waiting dogs
  • Grooming tables
  • Mirrors
  • Water bowls
  • Cameras and film
The Candidate will provide:
  • Hand/power tools
  • Scissors
  • Combs
  • Brushes
  • Clipper blades
The Examiners will be appointed by the Grooming Institute of Canada.

TEST CENTER LOCATIONS
Toronto, London, Niagara, Hamilton, Ottawa
Other venues can be arranged provided all test center conditions are met and a minimum of 3 candidates attend.

The Results
Candidates will not be informed of the results on the day of the test, and results will not be given by the Institute over the phone. The Institute will notify the candidates of the results in writing within 14 days of the test.

Failure Report and Retake Information
In the event of a failed result, candidates may apply to the Institute for a retake. Fail reports should be read in conjunction with the Syllabus and retakes will be accepted and a date allocated as set out below, allowing a period of time for the candidate to undergo further practice/instruction. Additional fees will apply.

Refund Policy and Change of Venue
Only in the event of candidate sickness can one cancellation be accepted and written notice of cancellation is required, with a doctors certificate, before transfer to another date is offered, or an administration charge of $25 will be made.

NSF Policy: A $25.00 administration charge will apply to any cheque not honored.

THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION
W2002
CANDIDATES MUST HAVE PASSED AT LEAST THREE PRACTICAL MODULES BEFORE SITTING THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION.
The written examination is held in September each yer and candidates sit the exam as external students of the National Agency of Pet Grooming Schools.

There are two written papers requiring short answers to in depth questions on the following range of subjects:

A. Health and Safety Business Law Employment Law Business Management
B. First Aid Anatomy Shows & Trials Nutrition Kennel Club Breed Standards Canadian Registration of Pure-Bred Dogs
SEMINAR ATTENDANCE

Seminars are run throughout the year and attendance is optional, but strongly advised

Practical Test (2001)
This fee is payable to the Grooming Institute of Canada on enrollment.

Singe Module $80.00
2 or more Modules on same day $70.00ea.
6 Modules prepaid $380.00

Written Examination (2002)
This fee is payable direct to the National Agency of Pet Grooming at the time of enrollment.

Section A $150.00

Section B $75.00
All fees are subject to 7% GST.
