The Grooming Institute of Canada Licensed Groomer of Exellence is a Skills Testing Program developed in conjunction with the National Agency of Pet Grooming Schools and the animal care industry. The aim of the Grooming Institute of Canada is to offer Professional Groomers and those training in this field the opportunity to gain a designation indicating they have achieved an internationally recognized standard of skills and knowledge in the canine and feline world. Entry to the examination is open to anyone who is employed, or training to be employed in professional establishments, and whose candidature for the examination has been approved by the Grooming Institute of Canada. Those intending to enter the examination should follow a course of self-instruction whilst gaining practical experience in their work or training. The Licensed Groomer of Excellence will be awarded only to those candidates who reach the required standard in both the practical and written components of the examination. ALL CANDIDATES MUST HAVE TAKEN, OR BE REGISTERED TO TAKE, THE PRACTICAL EXAM BEFORE REGISTERING TO TAKE THE WRITTEN EXAM. THE PRACTICAL TEST Enrollment Candidates must apply in writing to the Grooming Institute of Canada, using form 9901/E, enclosing a cheque made payable to the same for the Practical Test Fees. The deadline for application for the Practical Exam and payment of fees is 6 weeks before the exam date. Dates and Venues Examinations are carried out at Test Centers approved by the Institute. Where possible candidates will be offered a choice of venues and dates. Where a candidate nominates more than one Test Center for the practical component, it is on the understanding that each alternative is acceptable. Once an applicant has been accepted and assigned a date and venue for the exam, this cannot be changed or cancelled except in the event of unforeseen circumstances, ie fire, flood, power failure. Only then will an alternative date be arranged and fees refunded or credited in such circumstances. Dates are available on the third Sunday of each month, except for July, August and December when there are no test dates available. Written confirmationwill be sent for attendance at least 4 weeks before the exam using form 9901/R. All test dates are provisional until 3 full candidates have confirmed attendance and paid all fees in full. The Practical Test Candidates are responsible for obtaining three suitable dogs for the Tests and transporting them to and from the Test Center. The examinations comprise:
Membership Requirements Each individual testing out is reminded that he or she must be a member of the Canadian Kennel Club or local dog grooming association such as the Ontario Dog Groomers Association. Timetable 9:00am Test Center opens 9:15am Latest time for arrival 9:30am Practical tests commence 4:00pm Practical tests finish The examiners will decide in which order the candidates will prepare the dogs and at what time each part of the test will start. TEST CENTER LOCATIONS Toronto, London, Niagara, Hamilton, Ottawa Other venues can be arranged provided all test center conditions are met and a minimum of 3 candidates/ 9 dogs attend. The Results Candidates will not be informed of the results on the day of the test, and results will not be given by the Institute over the phone. The Institute will notify the candidates of the results in writing within 14 days of the test. Failure Report and Retake Information In the event of a failed result, candidates may apply to the Institute for a retake. Fail reports should be read in conjunction with the Syllabus and retakes will be accepted and a date allocated as set out below, allowing a period of time for the candidate to undergo further practice/instruction. Additional fees will apply.
Refund Policy and Change of Venue Only in the event of candidate sickness can one cancellation be accepted and written notice of cancellation is required, with a doctors certificate, before transfer to another date is offered, or an administration charge of $25 will be made. NSF Policy: A $25.00 administration charge will apply to any cheque not honored. THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION W9902 The written paper consists of 75 questions requiring short answers on the following range of subjects: Identifying various Breeds Grooming and styling techniques Customer Care Handling and Control First Aid General Care of Dogs Diseases Health and Safety at Work Use and Care of Equipment Legislation Enrollment Dates for the examination will be available on the third Sunday of each month except for July, August and December. Candidates are responsible for making their own enrollment arrangements. Candidates usually sit the exam as an external student at a National Agency of Pet Grooming test site. Candidates should show proof of registration for the practical exam, ie the invoice confirming registration or by exam results. The N.A.P.G.S. will register the candidate and collect the written exam fee plus any administration fees. The N.A.P.G.S. will notify you of your Candidate Enrollment Number which you should send to the Grooming Institute of Canada who will register your practical results for the issuing of appropriate certificate to be made.
